Swedish Gaming Authority Fines Yggdrasil Gaming
The Swedish Gaming Authority (SGA) fined Yggdrasil Gaming SEK300,000 ($28,350). Confirming the supply of online games to an unlicensed Swedish operator.
It is the first penalty under the new B2B licensing. The case also serves as a warning to the gambling industry. It signals that collaborating with unregulated operators will not be tolerated by the SGA.
The Severity of the Online Casino Game Supplier Offense
The B2B licensing requirements, effective from 1 July 2023. Ruling that licensed software developers must refrain from supplying software to unlicensed casino sites.
It encourages channelization toward the regulated Swedish market and prevents illegal activities. The fine shows the willingness of the SGA to enforce regulations against those not adhering. It also includes high-profile companies.
Examining several websites in January 2024, the SGA discovered Yggdrasil software on a site banned since October 2021.
It raised questions about the involvement of Yggdrasil in the black market. The software provider took action to correct the situation after learning about the violation on 23 January.
Acknowledging the prompt response by Yggdrasil Gaming, the SGA found that the severity of the violations warranted an official warning and financial penalty.
Sweden Remains Affected by Black-Market Operators
Frequent violations of the same calibre could lead to license suspension for offenders. Fortunately for Yggdrasil Gaming, cooperation with the authorities and a clean company track record limited the scope of corrective action.
The fine of SEK300,000 was calculated by the Swedish regulations according to the turnover of Yggdrasil in the past financial year. While the SGA acts frequently against offending operators, a new precedent goes after a software supplier. It could result in ongoing investigations.
Such measures will hopefully help Sweden give fewer options to source software and help Sweden’s ongoing battle against the black-market operators. The Yggdrasil warning corresponds with the concern about the number of payment providers catering to unregulated operators.
